Bridge
The Mackinac Bridge, also known as the "Mighty Mac," is a massive suspension bridge in Michigan connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas by spanning the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
It was designed by engineer Dr. David B. Steinman and opened to traffic on November 1, 1957, after groundbreaking in 1954. The bridge stretches about 26,372 feet (5 miles) in total length, with a main suspension span of 3,800 feet between its two towers which rise 552 feet above the water. The underside clearance is 155 feet to allow ship passage through the straits.
Its construction was a milestone in engineering, incorporating deep foundations reaching 210 feet below water to bedrock, an open-grid roadway deck to reduce wind resistance, and stiffening trusses for stability, incorporating lessons learned from the Tacoma Narrows Bridge failure.
The bridge was a critical replacement for ferry transport which had caused long waits and was a significant feat, holding records as one of the longest suspension bridges in the Western Hemisphere.
