Mountain Peak
The Maroon Bells are two striking peaks in Colorado’s Elk Mountains known as Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, standing over 14,000 feet tall and separated by about half a mile.
They are located near Aspen and are the most photographed mountains in North America due to their distinctive maroon-colored mudstone and picturesque setting beside Maroon Lake. The peaks are part of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness within the White River National Forest, which provides extensive hiking trails, vibrant wildflower meadows, dense aspen forests, and alpine tundra.
Their reddish color comes from iron-bearing minerals in the rock, and while popular with visitors for hiking and nature photography, the loose rock makes climbing challenging and sometimes dangerous. The wilderness area containing the Bells is one of Colorado’s largest and was designated under the original Wilderness Act of 1964, ensuring preservation of its natural beauty and cultural significance.
