MGM Grand Las Vegas opened on December 18, 1993, and at that time was the largest hotel in the world with over 5,000 rooms.
Its casino was also the largest in the world, spanning 171,500 square feet and featuring 3,500 slot machines and 165 table games. Originally, the resort featured a Wizard of Oz theme with costumed performers and animatronics representing characters from the film, along with a large dome and a magical show.
The entrance was marked by a massive 88-foot-tall fiberglass lion head, symbolizing the MGM logo. Over time, the theme was removed in favor of a more sophisticated and modern resort atmosphere.
Today, MGM Grand is known for its vast entertainment offerings including the Grand Garden Arena which hosts major concerts and sporting events, its numerous restaurants and nightlife venues, and a large luxury pool complex. It remains a key iconic hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip operated by MGM Resorts International.
