Historical Landmark
Michigan Central Station in Detroit, Michigan, is a historic landmark that opened in 1913 as the city’s main passenger rail depot, replacing an older station destroyed by fire earlier that year.
Designed by the architects of New York’s Grand Central Station, it features a three-story train depot and an 18-story office tower, built with over eight million bricks and extensive stone and steel, costing about $2.5 million at the time (nearly $80 million today).
Once the tallest railroad station in the world, it served up to 4,000 passengers daily during its peak in the 1940s and hosted notable figures like presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry Truman, as well as celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin and Thomas Edison.
The station’s grand interior included a large waiting room inspired by ancient Roman baths, with marble floors and high ceilings. Rail travel decline led to its closure in 1988, after which the building suffered from neglect and vandalism but was saved from demolition by historic preservation efforts.
Purchased by Ford Motor Company in 2018, it underwent a complete restoration to transform it into a mixed-use campus focused on the future of mobility, reopening fully in 2024 as a revitalized symbol of Detroit’s architectural heritage and innovation.
