Park
Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park is one of Florida's oldest state parks, established in 1935 through a land donation by Martin J. “Mike” Roess and developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, covering nearly 2,400 acres of rolling sandhills, marshes, ravines, lakes, and scrub midway between Jacksonville and Gainesville.
Its standout feature is a steephead ravine formed by Gold Head Branch with seepage springs, surrounded by rare old-growth longleaf pines, diverse wetlands, and lakes like Little Lake Johnson that support abundant wildlife including deer, birds, foxes, and possibly eagles.
Visitors enjoy hiking on nature trails and a 5.44-mile section of the Florida National Scenic Trail, swimming, fishing, canoeing, picnicking with pavilions and playgrounds, plus camping in sites with water and electricity or staying in historic CCC-built cabins, all within a serene, plane-free natural setting open from 8 a.m. to sunset.
