Nansen Ski Jump State Historic Site in Milan, New Hampshire, preserves the "Big Nansen," a towering 170-foot steel ski jump built in 1936 by the Nansen Ski Club—America's oldest continuously operating ski club founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1872.
Once the largest ski jump east of the Mississippi and in the world from 1936-1938, it hosted the first U.S. Olympic ski jumping trials in 1938, FIS World Championships in 1939, and national championships through 1972 before closing in 1988 due to disrepair.
Named for explorer Fridtjof Nansen and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site now offers public viewing, picnic areas, river access on the Androscoggin, and ongoing restoration efforts including a 2017 ceremonial jump by Olympian Sarah Hendrickson, with plans for renewed competitions.
