Nubble Light, also known as Cape Neddick Light, is one of Maine’s most iconic and frequently photographed lighthouses, located on a small rocky island just off the coast in Sohier Park, York.
Built with funding from Congress in 1874 and first lit in 1879, the 41-foot tall cast-iron tower lined with brick emits a red light visible for 13 nautical miles through its fourth-order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was created to protect maritime traffic guided by hazardous rocky coastlines and has a colorful red oil house built in 1902 on site. Although the island itself is not accessible to the public, visitors can enjoy spectacular views from Sohier Park, which offers amenities such as seasonal restrooms, a gift shop, picnic areas, and free parking.
Nubble Light was the last lighthouse in North America to be automated in 1987 and holds a storied maritime history, with local legends of phantom ship sightings near the light. The park and lighthouse are also well known for annual holiday illuminations, attracting many visitors to this picturesque coastal landmark.
