Park
Ohiopyle State Park spans 20,500 acres across Fayette County, Pennsylvania, between Chestnut Ridge and Laurel Hill, serving as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands with the Youghiogheny River Gorge as its centerpiece.
Opened in 1965 and dedicated in 1971 after acquisition under Project 70, it draws millions annually for world-class whitewater rafting on class III and IV rapids, plus kayaking, fishing, and boating, alongside highlights like 20-foot Ohiopyle Falls and 36-foot Cucumber Falls.
The park offers 79 miles of hiking trails including part of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, mountain biking on the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail, hunting on 18,000 acres for deer, bear, turkey, and squirrels, and unique biodiversity at Ferncliff Peninsula National Natural Landmark.
