Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park preserves the site of the first permanent non-native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley, where Mormon missionaries led by William Bringhurst built an adobe fort in 1855 along a spring-fed creek.
The fort, made of 150-foot-long adobe walls with towers, served as a watering, trading, and irrigation stop on the Old Spanish Trail between Salt Lake City and California. Although the Mormon settlers abandoned the fort by 1857 due to crop failures and internal conflicts, the adobe structures remained significant as they supported later ranching and trading activities by figures like Octavius Gass.
Today, the park, located in downtown Las Vegas, features part of the original fort walls, a reconstructed outpost, a visitor center with exhibits about the site's history, and artifacts that collectively narrate the early pioneer and settlement era in the region. The fort's legacy marks the birthplace of modern Las Vegas and offers a glimpse into its early development along historic trails.
