Old Louisville

Old Louisville, Kentucky, United States

Neighborhood

Old Louisville in Kentucky developed as the city’s first suburb starting in the 1870s and was originally called the Southern Extension.

The neighborhood grew rapidly after the Civil War, becoming home to Louisville’s wealthiest residents, including bourbon barons and tobacco industry leaders, who built grand Victorian-era mansions in styles such as Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque.

The area gained national attention during the Southern Exposition (1883-1887), which attracted millions and spurred more residential development. However, the early 20th century saw many families move to newer suburbs, and Old Louisville experienced decline through the mid-1900s as mansions were converted to apartments or demolished for commercial use.

Concerned residents formed restoration groups in the 1960s to save and renovate historic homes, leading to the neighborhood’s designation as a Preservation District in 1974. Today, Old Louisville is admired for having the largest contiguous collection of Victorian homes in the U.S., blending rich history with vibrant community life.
