State Park
Palms Book State Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a unique 388-acre natural area famous for Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as The Big Spring, Michigan's largest freshwater spring.
This spring spans 200 feet across and is about 40 feet deep, pumping over 10,000 gallons of crystal-clear water every minute from fissures in limestone bedrock at a constant 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Visitors can explore the spring using a self-propelled observation raft that offers close-up views of the underwater scenery, including ancient tree trunks, lime-covered branches, and trout swimming in the emerald-colored water.
The nearby trail and observation facilities are accessible for visitors with disabilities. The park also offers amenities such as picnic areas, restrooms, a concession stand, and a playground. Swimming, fishing, boating, and placing objects in the spring are prohibited to protect this natural wonder, which is surrounded by lush forests and scenic trails, making it a peaceful and captivating destination for nature lovers.
