Park
Paonia State Park is a compact Colorado state park of about 1,500–1,857 acres in Gunnison County, about 20 miles east of the town of Paonia and roughly 30 miles west of Crested Butte, nestled in a narrow canyon at about 6,500 feet elevation.
The park centers on a 334‑acre mountain reservoir created by Paonia Dam on Muddy Creek, an earthen structure built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in the early 1960s mainly to store irrigation water for the North Fork Valley. Visitors enjoy boating, water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, and swimming on the lake, with a public boat ramp and a pair of primitive campgrounds set near the water and a small stream.
The park is surrounded by the Ragged Mountains and the Raggeds Wilderness, offering a quiet, forested alpine setting free of paved roads and official hiking trails but rich in geology, with visible Cretaceous and Paleocene rock formations plus fossilized plant imprints, and it is typically open only in summer with visitors expected to bring their own drinking water.
