Tunnel
The Paw Paw Tunnel in Maryland is a 3,118-foot-long canal tunnel built on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to bypass a winding six-mile section of the Potomac River called the Paw Paw Bends.
Construction began in 1836 and was expected to take two years at a cost of $33,500 but faced numerous delays from labor disputes, funding issues, and difficult excavation through hard, loose shale, ultimately opening in 1850 after 14 years at a cost exceeding $600,000. The tunnel was an engineering marvel of its time, constructed with more than six million bricks to save building six miles of canal along the river.
It played a key role in the economic success of the canal and nearby Cumberland, Maryland, though it was challenging to maintain due to rockslides and traffic control issues. Now part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, the tunnel is open to the public as a historic site with interpretive features like weep holes and brass markers inside, and a scenic trail nearby offering views of the river bends.
