Park
Paynes Creek Historic State Park, located just southeast of Bowling Green in central Florida along Paynes Creek and the Peace River, preserves sites from the mid-19th century Seminole Wars era, including the Kennedy-Darling Trading Post attacked in 1849 and nearby Fort Chokonikla, the first in a chain of frontier outposts amid settler-Seminole tensions.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, its 410-acre grounds feature a visitor center museum with exhibits on pioneer and Seminole life, self-guided trails to the historic sites and Captain George S. Payne's monument, plus canoeing, kayaking, fishing, birding on the Great Florida Birding Trail, geocaching, and picnicking. Open daily with trails through gently sloping Polk Uplands terrain, it offers a peaceful blend of history and nature recreation.
