Memorial Park
Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is a towering 352-foot Doric column, the world's tallest of its kind, located on South Bass Island in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, commemorating Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's decisive American victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813, during the War of 1812.
Constructed from 1912 to 1915 by a multi-state commission to honor the fallen soldiers—whose remains, including three American and three British officers, were once buried at its base—and to symbolize the enduring peace between the United States, Britain, and Canada that followed, it was dedicated in 1931 after federal funding and redesignated a National Memorial in 1972.
Managed by the National Park Service amid 25 acres of grounds, visitors can tour the visitor center, ascend to a panoramic observation deck 12 feet above the Statue of Liberty's torch for Lake Erie views, and explore exhibits on the battle that secured U.S. control of the Great Lakes, drawing over 200,000 people annually.
