Town Hall
Philadelphia City Hall, completed in 1901, is a monumental building designed in the French Second Empire architectural style by John McArthur Jr.
It stands as the largest free-standing masonry building in the world and was the tallest habitable building from 1894 to 1908, reaching 548 feet including the statue of city founder William Penn atop its tower. Covering 14.26 acres and featuring nearly 700 rooms, City Hall was constructed over 30 years using brick, white marble, and limestone.
The exterior is ornately decorated with over 250 sculptures by Alexander Milne Calder, representing historical figures, allegories, and animals. Situated on what was once Centre Square—later renamed Penn Square—it serves as the seat of government and a symbol of Philadelphia’s industrial might and cultural heritage.
The building has undergone extensive restorations to preserve its architectural grandeur and remains a prominent landmark in the city skyline, admired for both its engineering and artistic achievements.
