Poinsett Bridge

Poinsett Bridge, South Carolina, United States

Historical Place

Poinsett Bridge, built in 1820, is the oldest surviving bridge in South Carolina and possibly the entire southeastern United States. Named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, a statesman and engineer who supervised its construction, the bridge was part of the Old Buncombe Road, a key route connecting Columbia, South Carolina, to Saluda Mountain.

The bridge spans 130 feet over Little Gap Creek and features a distinctive 14-foot high Gothic arch, made from locally quarried stone without mortar, a remarkable engineering achievement for its time.

It is believed to have been designed by Robert Mills, the architect of the Washington Monument. No longer in use for traffic since the mid-20th century, the bridge is preserved within the Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve, a 400-acre natural area managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

The site includes walking trails and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970, making it a significant historic and architectural landmark.
