Roxborough State Park is a roughly 3,300‑acre Colorado state park about 25 miles southwest of Denver in Douglas County, famous for its striking red sandstone formations.
The park sits where the Great Plains meet the Front Range, and its tilted Fountain Formation cliffs—leaning at about a 60‑degree angle—expose more than 300 million years of geological history, including rock layers from the Precambrian to the Late Mesozoic.
It is designated as a National Natural Landmark, a Colorado Natural Area, a National Archaeological District, and an Audubon Important Bird Area, reflecting its rich plant and animal life as well as its many prehistoric and historic sites. Visitors use about 15 miles of natural‑surface hiking trails to explore the rock outcrops, meadows, and mixed‑ecosystem landscape, while a visitor center provides interpretive exhibits and guided programs on geology, wildlife, and cultural history.
The park is day‑use only, with no camping, and restrictions are in place to protect the fragile environment, including a ban on pets and mountain biking and a prohibition on rock climbing.
