The Salem Witch Trials Memorial in Massachusetts is a solemn and quietly powerful park dedicated to the memory of the 20 people who were executed during the 1692 witch trials in colonial Salem.
Designed by artists Maggie Smith and James Cutler and opened in 1992 on the 300th anniversary of the trials, the memorial features 20 handcrafted granite benches inscribed with the names, dates, and methods of execution of the victims. Surrounding the memorial is a granite wall with inscriptions of the victims' protests of innocence, symbolizing society's disregard for their suffering. The site includes locust trees that represent the injustice experienced by those accused.
Located near the 17th-century Charter Street burial ground, the memorial offers a reflective space amid the historical structures of Salem, allowing visitors to contemplate this tragic miscarriage of justice and honor the victims who chose death rather than false confession. It stands as a respectful reminder of the dangers of hysteria and intolerance in history and remains freely accessible to the public from dawn till dusk.
