Situated on a picturesque stretch of the Long Island Sound, the park is known for its rocky coastline, sandy beaches, and rolling grounds that offer scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere for walkers, birdwatchers, and surfcasters. The property has a unique history, formerly serving as the site of the Seaside Sanatorium, a nationally significant tuberculosis hospital built in the early 20th century, and later as a center for developmental services.
While the historic sanatorium buildings currently remain on-site, the state is actively pursuing a "Passive Park Concept" that includes the eventual removal of these structures and the addition of improved walking trails, restrooms, picnic areas, and historic interpretive elements to honor the site's past.
Visitors to the park can enjoy the refreshing ocean air and frequent wildlife sightings, particularly coastal birds like ospreys that are known to nest on the property during the warmer months.
