Historical Landmark
The Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Kentucky was established in 1805 by a group of Shaker missionaries as a communal religious society that thrived for over a century.
It became the third-largest Shaker community in the United States, known for its distinctive architecture, skilled craftsmanship, and commitment to simplicity, equality, and sustainability. The Shakers built more than 260 structures over their 105 years there, including homes, workshops, and a municipal water system, making it a model of early American agricultural innovation and communal living.
The community produced a variety of goods like brooms, preserves, and seeds, with trade routes extending down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. Though the population peaked in the 1820s, the Industrial Revolution and social changes eventually led to the community's decline, with the last Shaker member passing away in 1923. The site later became a private town, but a nonprofit organization formed in the 1960s began restoring the village to its 19th-century appearance.
Today, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is the largest restored Shaker community and a Kentucky National Historic Landmark, offering visitors a rich glimpse into Shaker life, architecture, and heritage through extensive tours, demonstrations, and preserved buildings.
