Monument
The Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis is a 284.5-foot-tall neoclassical monument built between 1888 and 1901 to honor Indiana’s veterans from the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War.
Designed by German architect Bruno Schmitz, it stands at the center of Monument Circle and serves as an iconic symbol of the city and state. The monument features detailed bronze and limestone sculptures, an observation deck accessible by stairs or elevator, and inscriptions commemorating Indiana soldiers. Originally proposed in 1875 and funded through public donations and state appropriations, the monument was formally dedicated on May 15, 1902, with a large public event including veterans, parades, and fireworks.
It was the first monument in the United States dedicated to the common soldier and remains the largest of its kind in Indiana, representing the courage and sacrifice of Indiana’s military personnel across multiple conflicts.
