Park
St. Vrain State Park is a Colorado state park of about 600–690 acres near Firestone, just off I‑25 between Denver and Fort Collins, built around a chain of ponds and wetlands along the South St. Vrain Creek corridor.
The area began as gravel pits known as Barbour Ponds before being turned into a state recreation area in the 1960s and later renamed St. Vrain State Park, with additional ponds and Blue Heron Reservoir added in recent decades. The park is known for its year‑round fishing in several ponds that support species such as bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, and rainbow trout, as well as for its dense birdlife, including a large heron and egret rookery, waterfowl, and wintering bald eagles.
Visitors can camp on modern sites with full hookups, hike or bike on several miles of trails around the ponds, and enjoy birdwatching, photography, and picnicking in a mostly flat, people‑friendly landscape that combines wetland habitats with views of Longs Peak and the Front Range.
