Sugarite Canyon State Park, spanning 3,600 acres near Raton in northeastern New Mexico close to the Colorado border, blends historic early-20th-century coal-mining remnants with alpine forests, meadows, basalt cliffs, and two scenic lakes—Lake Maloya (120 acres) and Lake Alice—in the Raton Pass area of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at elevations from 6,900 to 8,400 feet.
Established in 1985 atop a former mining camp along the Santa Fe Trail, it draws visitors for non-motorized boating like kayaking and canoeing on the lakes, year-round trout fishing (including ice fishing), 18 miles of hiking trails incorporating old mining routes, rock climbing, mountain biking, abundant wildlife viewing of elk, bears, birds, butterflies, and wildflowers, plus camping at 48 sites with electric hookups, showers, restrooms, and RV amenities.
