Sunrise State Park spans 143 acres along the east shore of the Salmon River in East Haddam, Connecticut, sharing an entrance with Machimoodus State Park.
Originally the site of the Sunrise Resort from 1916 until its 2009 state purchase for $3.2 million, the former vacation spot with cottages and pools was mostly demolished by 2013 to restore its natural state amid woodlands and riverfront.
Managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, it offers picnicking, kayaking and fishing on the river, easy hiking trails connecting to nearby parks, bald eagle viewing, and winter cross-country skiing.
