Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park covers over 4,000 acres southwest of Pensacola in Escambia County, Florida, protecting rare wet prairies, pine flatwoods, coastal bayous, and one of the largest stands of endangered pitcher plants including the unique white-topped variety found only along the Gulf Coast between the Apalachicola and Mississippi Rivers.
This botanical hotspot also shelters nearly 100 rare species like the alligator snapping turtle, sweet pitcher plant, and Chapman's butterwort amid seepage streams and Perdido River floodplains. Visitors access a half-mile ADA boardwalk trail to Tarkiln Bayou for picnics and wildlife viewing, hike the rugged 6.5-mile Perdido Bay Trail to beaches, enjoy birding and fishing, all open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset for a $3 vehicle fee with benches and observation decks.
