Monastery
The Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach, Florida, is a remarkable historic structure originally built between 1133 and 1141 in Sacramenia, Spain, known then as "The Monastery of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels."
It was later renamed after Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a prominent Cistercian monk whose followers occupied the monastery for about 700 years. During the 1830s social upheaval in Spain, the monastery was seized, sold, and repurposed into a granary and stable. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery's cloisters and outbuildings, had them carefully dismantled into over 11,000 crates, and shipped to the United States.
Following financial difficulties, the crates stayed in storage for over two decades until entrepreneurs reassembled the structure in North Miami Beach over 19 months, a process called “the world's largest jigsaw puzzle.” In 1964, the monastery was gifted to the Bishop of Florida and now serves as an active Episcopal parish and a cultural landmark.
The site blends medieval European architecture with a spiritual atmosphere, making it a unique historical and religious destination in Florida.
