The Astoria Column

The Astoria Column, Oregon, United States

Historical Landmark

The Astoria Column in Oregon is a 125-foot tall tower built in 1926 atop Coxcomb Hill near the mouth of the Columbia River, created to celebrate the region’s history and the early pioneers who shaped the Pacific Northwest.

Financed by the Great Northern Railway and Vincent Astor, descendant of John Jacob Astor, it was designed by architect Electus Litchfield with artwork by Attilio Pusterla. The column features a spiral mural almost 525 feet long painted with the sgraffito technique, vividly depicting 14 key historical events from the area, including Native American life, Captain Robert Gray's Columbia River discovery in 1792, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the arrival of the railroad.

This monument, resembling Rome's Trajan Column, offers visitors panoramic views after climbing its 164-step spiral staircase and stands as a cherished symbol of Astoria’s heritage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974.
