Tourist Attraction
The Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, is a former tuberculosis hospital that opened in 1910 amid a severe tuberculosis outbreak in the area.
It was built as a secluded facility designed to isolate and treat patients with advanced pulmonary tuberculosis, featuring fresh air therapies, heat lamps, and rest, although there were no effective medicines at the time.
The sanatorium grew to a large five-story building in 1926 with a capacity of over 400 patients and operated as a near self-sufficient community with farmland, laundry facilities, and a post office. Due to the contagious nature of the disease, strict quarantines were in place, and underground tunnels were used to discreetly transport deceased patients to maintain morale.
The discovery of antibiotics in the 1940s eventually reduced the need for such hospitals, and Waverly Hills closed in 1961. Afterwards, the property was used as a geriatric center but faced closure due to neglect.
Today, it stands as a historic tourist attraction known for its eerie atmosphere, haunted reputation, and guided tours that share both its medical history and ghost stories, drawing visitors interested in both history and paranormal activity.
