Park
Torreya State Park spans 13,735 acres along Florida's Apalachicola River in the Panhandle north of Bristol, renowned for its dramatic high bluffs rising 150 to 300 feet above the water, steep ravines, swamps, and pine flatwoods that evoke Appalachian terrain more than typical Florida landscapes.
Named for the extremely rare torreya tree—a relic species found only here on the bluffs, with fewer than 200 mature specimens surviving after Hurricane Michael's damage—the park protects unique plants like Florida yew, bigleaf magnolia, and azaleas, alongside wildlife including deer, bobcats, bald eagles, and the endemic Bartrug's map turtle.
Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, it offers 13 miles of scenic hiking trails like the challenging Torreya Loop and Perimeter Trail, primitive and RV camping, picnicking near the historic Gregory House, birdwatching for over 100 species, and stunning fall foliage, all open daily from 8 a.m. to sundown for a small entry fee.
