USS Sachem Ruins

USS Sachem Ruins, Kentucky, United States

Historical Place

The USS Sachem, originally built as a luxury yacht named Celt in 1901, was later converted into a U.S. Naval vessel during World War I and renamed USS Sachem (SP-192).

It was outfitted for coastal patrol and anti-submarine warfare and even served as a floating laboratory for Thomas Edison, who conducted experiments aboard to combat German U-boat threats. After military service, the ship returned to private use but eventually fell into disrepair. In 1987, the aging vessel was brought to Kentucky, navigating a complex 2,600-mile journey through rivers and canals to a creek near Boone County, where it has since remained abandoned.

Known locally as the "ghost ship," the USS Sachem lies as decaying ruins in a tributary of the Ohio River and has become a popular though unofficial destination for kayakers and history enthusiasts. Efforts to restore and preserve the ship have been discussed by local groups, but the vessel remains a symbol of a rich and varied maritime past now slowly being reclaimed by nature.
