Van Buren State Park covers 296 acres of remnant woodland in Hancock County, northwestern Ohio, nestled amid vast agricultural fields south of the village of Van Buren, offering a serene escape with beech-maple forests, glacial till plains, and Rocky Ford Creek.
Originally a Shawnee-inhabited wildlife preserve, a dam built in 1939 created a 45-acre lake for fish and game until its removal in August 2025 for stream restoration, now supporting hand- and electric-powered boating, kayaking, fishing for bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie, plus 12 miles of flat multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding from a horse camp.
Year-round draws include 38 non-electric campsites, equestrian facilities, disc golf, picnicking, volleyball, horseshoes, abundant wildlife like deer, fox, squirrels, opossums, and birds such as bluebirds and owls, plus seasonal wildflowers, winter ice activities, and free dawn-to-dusk access.
