State Park
Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park in eastern Nevada preserves six large, beehive-shaped stone charcoal ovens built in 1876 to produce charcoal for smelting silver ore from nearby mines in the Ward Mining District.
The ovens were operated for just a few years during the silver boom before being phased out due to depleted ore and limited timber. After mining ended, the sturdy ovens served as shelters for travelers and ranchers and reportedly as bandit hideouts. The park, established as a state monument in 1969 and designated a state park in 1994, offers visitors a glimpse of Nevada's mining history amid scenic high desert surroundings, with hiking, camping, and stargazing opportunities near the well-preserved 30-foot tall ovens with thick walls built by skilled Italian stonemasons.
