State Park
Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion Historic Site in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a 40-room colonial clapboard mansion on 37 acres overlooking Little Harbor, built as the home, offices, and working farm of New Hampshire's first royal governor, Benning Wentworth, who lived there from 1753 until 1767 while granting land charters that shaped the region.
Composed of multiple connected structures finished with high-end plaster and woodwork, it served as the colony's political and social center with council chambers, entertaining spaces, and family quarters amid gardens, barns, and waterfront views, later preserved by the Coolidge family in the 1880s and donated to the state in 1954.
Now a state historic site managed by the Division of Parks and Recreation, it offers guided tours of restored rooms, archaeological exhibits, gardens, and events highlighting 18th-century aristocratic life in one of America's few surviving royal governors' residences.
