Zoo
Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood, New Mexico, just 20 minutes east of Albuquerque, spans 122 acres as a nonprofit wildlife refuge and enhanced zoo operated by the New Mexico Wildlife Association, housing over 20 species of native animals like black bears, cougars, wolves, elk, bobcats, javelina, foxes, raptors, and mule deer that were rescued from injuries, orphans, or illegal pets and cannot return to the wild.
Founded over 25 years ago by Roger Alink on former vacant land, the park's custom habitats were entirely built by youth through the Youth Conservation Corps learning construction, animal care, and public relations skills, with each exhibit sharing personal stories alongside educational plaques. Open year-round with extended summer hours, visitors enjoy paved walkways, interactive presentations, the Kid's Imagination Trail play area, Chuckwagon Dinners with live music, and special events like the Wildlife Festival for close encounters in a safe, enriching environment.
