Tourist Attraction
Elwood, known as the World's Largest Concrete Gnome, is located at Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa.
Standing 15 feet tall and weighing about 3,500 pounds, Elwood was created in 2010 by artists Andy and Connie Kautza of National Rock and Sculpture, Inc. from Wausau, Wisconsin. Constructed with concrete and reinforced steel, Elwood was designed as part of Reiman Gardens' "Celebration of Garden Ornamentation" theme.
Although initially intended to be the tallest gnome, a taller fiberglass gnome in Poland was discovered during construction, so Elwood holds the record specifically as the largest concrete garden gnome. This massive and whimsical statue serves as a popular photo spot and a unique attraction within the 17-acre botanical garden on the Iowa State University campus, which features a variety of themed garden areas, an indoor conservatory, and a butterfly wing.
