Yampa River State Park is a linear Colorado state park spread over about 3,112 acres along a 134‑mile stretch of the Yampa River in Routt and Moffat counties, west of Steamboat Springs and extending from Hayden toward the boundary of Dinosaur National Monument.
The park is actually three “parks in one,” with a main headquarters near Hayden, several river‑access campgrounds, and the nearby Elkhead Reservoir State Park, offering boating, fishing, camping, and wildlife watching in a high‑desert and canyon setting.
There are 13 public access points along the river plus around five main campgrounds, ranging from modern sites with showers and hookups to more primitive riverside spots, and the park is known for Class I–V boating, flatwater paddling, birding, and viewing species such as bald eagles, moose, elk, and mule deer.
The area grew out of the Yampa River Legacy Project, which sought to protect working ranchlands, riparian habitats, and scenic river stretches while still supporting recreation, and it opened in 1998 as a way to enjoy the Yampa River corridor from Hayden to the Utah border.
