Zoo
Zoo Miami, located southwest of downtown Miami, Florida, began as the Crandon Park Zoo in 1948 with a few animals left stranded by a closing circus.
After severe damage from Hurricane Betsy in 1965, the zoo was relocated and reopened in 1980 as Miami MetroZoo on former Naval Air Station Richmond land. It is the largest zoo in Florida and the only tropical zoo in the continental U.S., spanning nearly 750 acres with over 3,000 animals representing around 500 species.
The zoo features diverse habitats modeled after regions such as Asia, Africa, and the Everglades, providing spacious, open-air exhibits. It has grown through expansions and additions like the Wings of Asia aviary and the Everglades exhibit. Zoo Miami is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and participates in global conservation efforts.
It remains a top Miami attraction, blending education, recreation, and conservation in a subtropical setting.
