Afton Mountain Vineyards is a historic vineyard located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Nelson County, Virginia, about 30 minutes west of Charlottesville.
Established in 1978, it is one of Virginia's oldest farm wineries, originally known as Bacchanal Vineyards. The vineyard sits at nearly 1,000 feet elevation on the eastern slope of Afton Mountain, benefiting from ideal conditions such as well-drained dyke-loam soil and a microclimate shaped by nearby gaps in the mountains, which provide protection from frost and good air circulation.
The vineyard produces exclusively dry wines from estate-grown grapes and has a reputation for quality that blends traditional and modern winemaking techniques. Owned since 2009 by Tony and Elizabeth Smith, the winery features a tasting house and pavilion surrounded by scenic mountain views, offering visitors a personal and authentic experience of Virginia’s wine heritage.
