Monument
The George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Westmoreland County, Virginia, commemorates the site where George Washington, the first President of the United States, was born on February 22, 1732.
The monument sits at the confluence of Popes Creek and the Potomac River on a 551-acre plantation once inhabited by seven generations of the Washington family. The original house, known as Wakefield, was expanded several times before being destroyed by fire and flood in 1779, and was never rebuilt. The current Memorial House, built in the early 1930s, is a Colonial Revival structure on near the original site, accompanied by a colonial-style kitchen and period gardens.
The site also features a granite Memorial Shaft obelisk erected in 1896, a family burial ground, and extensive grounds showcasing the history of Washington’s family and early Virginia colonial life. Operated by the National Park Service, the monument offers visitors a chance to learn about Washington's formative years and the rich heritage of the Northern Neck region, along with opportunities to explore peaceful natural surroundings and historic landscapes.
