Island

Angel Island State Park is the largest natural island in San Francisco Bay, covering 740 acres off Tiburon in Marin County, California, with Mount Caroline Livermore rising to 788 feet and offering panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the city skyline.

Named Isla de los Angeles by Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775, it served Coast Miwok Native Americans as a fishing and hunting ground for millennia before becoming a U.S. military base from 1863 to 1946—known as Fort McDowell—and the "Ellis Island of the West" immigration station from 1910 to 1940, processing about one million immigrants, mostly Chinese, amid harsh interrogations and wall poetry by detainees.

Today accessible only by ferry or private boat, visitors hike 13 miles of trails through oak woodlands, grasslands, and beaches, explore preserved immigration barracks now a National Historic Landmark, enjoy 11 environmental campsites, picnicking, kayaking, and ranger programs in a car-free oasis teeming with mule deer, harbor seals, and birds.
