Park
Arkansas Post National Memorial is a 757-acre protected site near Gillett, Arkansas, that commemorates the first European settlement in the lower Mississippi River Valley, established in 1686.
Designated as a National Memorial in 1960, the site honors the post's complex history, including its role as the first capital of the Arkansas Territory from 1819 to 1821, the site of a 1783 American Revolutionary War battle, and the location of the Civil War’s Battle of Fort Hindman in 1863.
The memorial consists of two units—the Memorial Unit and the Osotouy Unit—where visitors can explore trails and exhibits that provide insight into the diverse cultures, colonial developments, and military conflicts that shaped the region. The Memorial Unit features a visitor center, a museum, and a theater, along with paved trails that allow guests to view the Arkansas River and remnants of historic fortifications and trenches.
While much of the original historic settlement has been obscured by river erosion and shifting channels over the centuries, the park remains a vital space for interpreting the layered heritage of Native American, French, Spanish, and American influences at this strategic river confluence.
