Government Office
The Arkansas State Capitol building in Little Rock, completed in 1915, serves as the seat of the state government and the home of the Arkansas General Assembly.
Its construction spanned over 15 years on the site of the old state penitentiary, with prison labor contributing to its build. Designed initially by George Mann and later revised by Cass Gilbert, the capitol features neoclassical architecture combining Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian elements.
It is constructed primarily of Arkansas limestone with an Indiana limestone dome rising 213 feet above the ground, topped by a gilded lantern cupola. The building includes 287,000 square feet of interior space and houses legislative offices and state officials. The bronze entrance doors were crafted by Tiffany & Company.
The Arkansas State Capitol stands as a monumental symbol of the state's government, history, and architectural heritage, reflecting legislative and executive functions since its opening.
