Bald Head Island in southeastern Brunswick County, North Carolina, is the southernmost of the state’s cape islands, situated at the confluence of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean.
It is reachable only by passenger ferry or private vessel and covers about 12,000 acres, including 10,000 acres of marsh, beach, and maritime forest preserves. The island is home to Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse built in 1817, and features 14 miles of ocean beaches, wooded trails, tidal creeks for kayaking, and diverse wildlife including nearly 200 species of birds, dolphins, and loggerhead turtles.
Historically it served as a British fort during the American Revolution and a Confederate base during the Civil War. Despite recent geographical changes turning it into a peninsula due to hurricanes, it retains its island identity and offers an unspoiled natural environment and quaint residential neighborhoods respecting its subtropical beauty.
