Over the years, beach erosion brought the ocean dangerously close to the base, threatening the lighthouse's existence, which led to its historic relocation in 1999—moved 2,900 feet inland on rails to safeguard it.
The lighthouse, part of the Cape Hatteras Light Station including keeper’s quarters and other buildings, continues to serve as an essential beacon for mariners and a symbol of coastal heritage.
