Historical Place Museum
The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis is the former home of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president of the United States, located in the Old Northside Historic District.
The Italianate-style red brick house with sixteen rooms was built between 1874 and 1875 and features architectural details like a three-story bay window, parquet floors, and walnut and butternut woodwork. Harrison lived there before, during, and after his presidency, and it was from the front porch of this house that he conducted his famous 1888 "Front Porch Campaign." The home was modernized in 1896 with electricity and a front porch addition.
After Harrison’s death in 1901, the house was eventually converted into a museum operated by the Benjamin Harrison Foundation. It opened for regular public tours in 1974 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. The museum preserves many of the original furnishings and exhibits Harrison’s life, presidency, and the Victorian era ambiance.
Recent renovations have enhanced the historical accuracy of the site and added a presidential research library and Citizenship Plaza outside, where naturalization ceremonies are held annually, creating an engaging educational and memorial space dedicated to Indiana’s only president.
