The James J. Hill House in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is a grand mansion built in 1891 for railroad tycoon James J. Hill, known as the "Empire Builder."
The 36,000-square-foot home, designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by the Boston firm Peabody, Stearns and Furber, features rugged stone construction, intricate woodwork, 22 fireplaces, 16 stained-glass chandeliers, and modern innovations for its time like indoor plumbing and electric lighting. It served as a family residence for Hill, who played a major role in the expansion of the Great Northern Railway, and was regarded as one of the grandest homes in Minnesota.
After Hill’s death, the house was donated to the Catholic Church before the Minnesota Historical Society acquired it in 1978, restoring it as a museum open for guided tours that showcase the opulent lifestyle of the Gilded Age elite and Hill’s influence on regional development. The house also includes an art gallery and hosts special events, preserving the legacy of one of America’s most influential railroad magnates.
