Biltmore Estate near Asheville, North Carolina, is America’s largest privately-owned home, built between 1889 and 1895 by George Washington Vanderbilt II as a grand French Renaissance-style chateau with 250 rooms, including 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, an indoor pool, and a vast library.

The estate originally covered 125,000 acres but now encompasses about 8,000 acres including formal gardens by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and the first managed forest in the U.S., which helped pioneer American forestry.

Opened to the public in 1930 during the Great Depression to sustain its upkeep, the estate includes the mansion, extensive gardens, a winery, shops, and accommodations, drawing over a million visitors annually to experience its architecture, art, horticulture, and history.​
