Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina, United States

Route

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches 469 miles through the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park as the longest linear park in the U.S., designed for scenic drives with stunning vistas, forests, and overlooks.

This two-lane road winds along mountain ridges at speeds no higher than 45 mph, featuring 168 bridges, six viaducts, and 26 tunnels mostly in North Carolina, with frequent pull-offs for hiking trails, historic sites like Brinegar Cabin, and spots such as Linn Cove Viaduct and Price Lake. Built starting in 1935 during the Great Depression for jobs and completed in 1987, it remains free to drive but closes in winter due to ice and snow, especially in higher elevations up to 6,047 feet near Mount Pisgah.

Access points near towns like Asheville, Boone, and Roanoke make it ideal for day trips or multi-day explorations on foot or by car, showcasing wildlife, waterfalls, and wildflowers year-round when open.
