Rail Museum
The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, also known as Communipaw Terminal, is a historic passenger terminal located on the waterfront in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Built in 1889 to replace an earlier station, it was a major transit hub connecting New Jersey with Manhattan via ferry and accommodating train services that stretched as far as Pennsylvania. The terminal played a critical role in immigration, serving as a gateway for millions arriving at Ellis Island who then traveled onward into the United States. At its peak, the terminal handled tens of thousands of commuters daily with multiple ferry runs and numerous train tracks.
Passenger service ended in 1967 after the railroad’s bankruptcy, but the terminal has since been preserved as part of Liberty State Park. Today, it serves as a historical site where visitors can explore the terminal’s architecture, learn about its transportation and immigration history, and enjoy waterfront views next to landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
